From A Tough Boss To My Own Boss

Clashing with my boss made me learn to love numbers—even though I hate math.

I’m David Bird, founder and owner of Bird’s Eye Marketing.

I’m a Google Ads expert and digital marketing professional. Which means I work a lot with numbers, spreadsheets and math.

I Have Always Hated Numbers and Math

In 2007, a tough boss with a love of numbers broke through my ‘math phobia.’ All Tom cared about were numbers. In fact, that is how he made decisions and allocated project funding. It didn’t take me long to realize that if I was going to get anywhere working for Tom, I better start liking numbers too.

So off I went to our company webmaster. He toured me through our website data and showed me how to find the customer behaviour information that was being generated every day through our website.

Sexy Results From Not-so-sexy Numbers

Slogging through web data was not my idea of fun, but Tom loved the results, and I have to admit, so did I! Soon, I was regularly using that boring web data to spot new opportunities, and as a result, generating a ton of new sales leads!

It wasn’t long before now not-so-tough Tom started assigning me to our team’s most challenging projects, sending me for more training… and promoting me.

Setting Out On My Own

The more I learned, the more efficient I became with data. Eventually, I decided I wanted to apply my skills to more than one company. So, in 2012, I started Bird’s Eye Marketing using my Google Analytics and Google AdWords (now Google Ads) expertise. I haven’t regretted the move to entrepreneurship one bit!

My Career

I’ve worked at a wide range of high profile companies, including Cisco, Hewlett Packard, Mitel, Halogen Software, and others.

My Personal Life

My favourite sport is curling—some people call it bowling on ice with sweeping! Although born and raised in Toronto, I now live in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, with my wife, two daughters and two cats.
